I've been having a lot of moments recently. life growing moments, where it seems like life is against you. I've been trying to stay positive through it all, but sometimes it's easy to fall victim to nagging pessimistic thoughts...

but then I remember my faith, and realize all the silly drama and worries are worthless. As long as I stay true to who I am and have faith in the Lord, everything will work out exactly how it's supposed to.

I was shooting a scene in my new film, No Strings Attached, in which I say to Natalie Portman,
“If you miss me. you can’t text, you can’t email, you can’t post it on my Facebook wall. If you really miss me, you come and see me.”
I began to think of all of the billions of intimate exchanges sent daily via fingers and screens, bouncing between satellites and servers. With all this texting, emailing, and social networking, I started wondering, are we all becoming so in touch with one another that we are in danger of losing touch?

It used to be that boy met girl and they exchanged phone numbers. Anticipation built. They imagined the entire relationship before a call ever happened. The phone rang. Hearts pounded. “Hello?” Followed by a conversation that lasted two hours but felt like two minutes and would be examined with friends for two weeks. If all went well, a date was arranged. That was then.

Now we exchange numbers but text instead of calling because it mitigates the risks of early failure and eliminates those deafening moments of silence. Now anticipation builds. Bdoop. “It was NICE meeting u” Both sides overanalyze every word. We talk to a friend, an impromptu Cyrano: “He wrote nice in all caps. What does that mean? What do I write back?” Then we write a response and delete it 10 times before sending a message that will appear 2 care, but not 2 much. If all goes well, a date will be arranged.

Whether you like it or not, the digital age has produced a new format for modern romance, and natural selection may be favoring the quick-thumbed quip peddler over the confident, ice-breaking alpha male. Or maybe we are hiding behind the cloak of digital text and spell-check to present superior versions of ourselves while using these less intimate forms of communication to accelerate the courting process. So what’s it really good for?

There is some argument about who actually invented text messaging, but I think it’s safe to say it was a man. Multiple studies have shown that the average man uses about half as many words per day as women, thus text messaging. It eliminates hellos and goodbyes and cuts right to the chase. Now, if that’s not male behavior, I don’t know what is. It’s also great for passing notes. there is something fun about sharing secrets with your date while in the company of others. think of texting as a modern whisper in your lover’s car.

Sending sweet nothings on Twitter or Facebook is also fun. in some ways, it’s no different than sending flowers to the office: You are declaring your love for everyone to see. Who doesn’t like to be publicly adored. Just remember that what you post is out there and there’s some stuff you can’t un-see. But the reality is that we communicate with every part of our being, and there are times when we must use it all. When someone needs us, he or she needs all of us. There’s no text that can replace a loving touch when someone we love is hurting.

We haven’t lost romance in the digital age, but we may be neglecting it. In doing so, antiquated art forms are taking on new importance. The power of a hand-written letter is greater than ever. It’s personal and deliberate means more than an email or text ever will. It has a unique scent. It requires deciphering. But, most important, it’s flawed. There are errors in handwriting, punctuation, grammar, and spelling that show our vulnerability. And vulnerability is the essence of romance. It’s the art of being uncalculated, the willingness to look foolish, the courage to say,

“This is me, and I’m interested in you enough to show you my flaws with the hope that you may embrace me for all that I am but, more importantly, all that I am not.”

I remember Oprah quoting this line during her final episode {man do I miss her show!}and It stuck with me. The only thing I know for sure that we have control over is ourselves. We can't control what other people do, think, or feel, but we do have control over those things for ourselves. It's just the kind of inspiration I need at the moment.

It was the end of the day and as we were preparing for dismissal I noticed one of my students seemed upset. I asked him what was wrong, but he wouldn't tell me. I figured if I gave him some space he would tell me when he was ready. A few minutes later I saw tears in his eyes, so I pulled him aside, and with a little prying he finally confessed what was wrong...

at first I wanted to laugh. what does "breaking up" mean to a 6 year old? and to be honest, I didn't even know these two students were even friends...

but then I saw the pure anguish in this boys face, so I gave him a hug, told him how awesome he is, and also that we don't have boyfriend and girlfriends in kindergarten. Which another student in the class added...yea, you have to be 18 to be able to do that.

2 minutes later all was forgotten and everyone was happy again :-)

this year I opted for a more low key night, spent with family and friends.

it's not about where you are, but who you're with that matters.

we created a mock-photo booth. I made the sign and props with the new cricut I got for Christmas (love that gift!!!), and even though the pics didn't come out that great (lighting wasn't ideal) we did have some fun capturing new memories.

Year in Review {2011}

They say as you get older, time goes by quicker, and now I know exactly what they mean.

I feel like we were just celebrating the end of 2010/beginning of 2011, and now in just 1 short day we will be welcoming in 2012. I like to think of New Years Eve as a way to celebrate all the good things that have happened the year before, and toast to all the great things we hope for in the coming year.

A 2011 worth celebrating:

I got to watch this babe grow and turn 1 year old!

I purchased my first brand new car! {felt like such a grown up :-) }

celebrated two of my close college friends getting married {as well as many birthdays and girls night outs!}

fell more in love with summer, and country music

and I started teaching Kindergarten, which I absolutely LOVE!

of course, this only highlights some of the good things that happened. I like to believe there's at least one thing everyday worth celebrating (remember, it's the little things in life...)

Christmas Lights

I hope you all had a wonderful Christmas! (those who celebrate)

Mine was fantastic! Even though I wasn't much in the holiday spirit leading up to the weekend, being surrounded by family, especially my young cousins and seeing the excitement in their eyes, I found the spirit. One tradition my family enjoys doing every Christmas is driving around and looking at Christmas lights. There are some beautiful homes in our area that go all out with decorating. and now with light shows synchronized to music, there is no shortage of entertainment.

and there's always at least one house with over the top, tacky decorations that cover every inch of the yard... {this picture doesn't even do it justice}

How I Spend my Days

A few weeks ago I posted pictures from my classroom, and two days later I found out that my job was going to change. No longer am I teaching reading intervention this year, but now I'm teaching Kindergarten. It's exciting, but a bit overwhelming {and explains my momentary lapse in blogging} I had 1 week to prepare a new classroom...most teachers have1 month at the end of summer. I find myself exhausted by the end of the day/week, but I love everyone of my 21 students!

and no matter how tired I am, or how "bad" the day may have seemed, nothing beats having a student ask if they can "fill my bucket" and then having them give me a hug. :-)

For this week's Teacher Tuesday, I thought it might be fun to share some pictures of my classroom.

This is my third year teaching Reading Intervention. I work with the K-1 students at our school, and since I do pull out intervention, I work with only small groups of students, no more than 5 students at a time. Since this is only our second week of school, we're still doing a lot of assessments, and I haven't started taking any students yet, so my classroom is still a work in progress. :)

This is what you see when you first walk into the room. The back wall is where the sight word wall and writing center are located.

The front wall is where most of the instruction happens. Since I never have more than 5 students at a time, everyone fits nicely around the kidney table. We do a lot of literacy and phonics lessons, as well as guided reading.

This is the "reading corner", where I hope students will "catch the reading bug". They can pick books to read on their own, or listen to books on tape.

The "catch the reading bug" bulletin board for the beginning of the year. This board will be changing soon, as I begin to introduce the "reading buddies" aka beanie baby reading strategies. I will be replacing this board with these posters I found at Under the Alphabet Tree.

at the writing center I used chalkboard paint on the table. It's a fun center for my kindergartners to practice writing their letters with chalk.

I decided to use the Kindness Tree again this year. Since I work with many different students throughout the day, I like being able to give immediate praise to students who are showing kindness to other students. At the beginning of the year we talk about what it means to be kind and how to show kindness to others. When I catch someone being kind, they earn a leaf with their name on it that goes on the tree. The students really respond to this, and like to collect leaves on the tree.

My desk, and the amazing storage area behind it. This is a new room for me this year, so I'm still busy organizing all our phonics games and materials that will be stored on those shelves and in the closet. This is the part of my room that's still a bit of a mess... ;-)

and a daily reminder to help me get through those crazy days us teachers sometimes have. :)

Labor Day Weekend

Though many teachers across the country went back to work in August, around here we traditionally don't start back to school until the day after Labor Day. This makes Labor Day Weekend truly the last weekend of summer. Because of this, I tried to squeeze as much end-of-summer fun into my weekend.

Saturday was HOT HOT HOT. Temps reached near 100, the perfect day to take the boat out for the last time this season. Very bittersweet. I think my cousin Jason is going to miss it the most. He spent almost the entire time out in the water tubing and skiing. I will miss these fun and relaxing days on the lake!

On Sunday it rained most of the day, and I found myself curled up reading The Help. I'm usually a "read the book before I go see the movie" type of person, but occasionally a movie will inspire me to read the book. This has happened previously twice, with Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone and The Notebook. What I love about seeing the movie first, is when you read the book it's like replaying the movie in your head while getting to know the characters on a deeper level. So far I love both the movie and the book The Help.

On Monday I pulled out my rain gear and headed to the county fair. It's crazy how much the weather can change over 1 weekend. We went from 100 degrees on Sat, to cool, fall like weather by Monday. One thing I love about the fair...Fair Food! I will happily admit I ate fried oreos and pickles for my dinner that night. haha

and we ended the weekend at the Blake Shelton and Chris Young concert. The more country concerts I go to, the more I love country music. and both of these guys are h-o-t-t hot! I definitely have a new-found crush on Chris Young. He can sing to me anytime...

overall, it was a wonderful end-of-summer weekend, and I'm sad to see the summer come to an end!

Kids love anything that is hands on and sensory oriented, and these bags can be used for students to practice writing the letters with their fingers, sight words in the gel, and even numbers. This is something I will add to my centers this school year.

sticking with the fine motor theme, I think this would be a great way for students to practice fine motor while learning their colors. I would tweak the activity a bit to make it a little more challenging for my students and have them match the color pompoms to the correct color word. another great beginning kindergarten activity.

and of course, you have to start out the year introducing the students to Bucket Fillers. I was introduced to this book/idea a few years ago by a fellow teacher. I find myself wasting hours on the computer looking at and searching for images. when I found this picture of this beautiful house my heart skipped a beat. I've always had a love for the charm and character of old historic homes, and when I came across this image I instantly fell in love. I don't know where this house is, but someday I want to live in a house just like it. :)

*having family visiting from out of town and seeing how much my little cousins are growing.

*getting a wake up call at 8 am on my day off from one of my best friends telling me that she's engaged!!

*my 8 year old cousin riding roller coasters that some of my 26 year old friends won't even ride...she's a true ride warrior.

I've been to DC so many times that I've lost track of the number. One of my best friends from childhood lives there, and now so does my cousin. I love visiting and staying with them because I feel like more of a local, hanging out at their favorite restaurants and bars. and it gives them a chance to be tourists by visiting the monuments and museums with me. I love DC, so much that I'm even thinking of possibly moving there.

and p.s. I tried getting a picture of the White House, but we went by to see it at night, after being at the bar, and none of my pictures came out... that will be on my list of things to do next time I go. ;)

He Put a Ring on it!! {Joke Gone Bad}

Over the weekend a good friend and coworker got married. Instead of having a cake, they had cupcakes at the reception. Well, on top of these cupcakes were fake diamond rings. Some of the ladies and I were playing around and put the rings on and took some pictures. We were dared to post those pictures to facebook and see what people would say.

I didn't really think anything of it, NO ONE is going to believe this! Oh was I wrong!

People started leaving comments congratulating me! We thought it was hilarious and decided to take it one step farther and grab one of the groomsmen to take a picture with.

I met this guy literally two seconds before this pic. He was such a good sport and totally played along. Then we posted this to facebook, and things really started to get out of hand! I was getting texts and messages...

I mean, I'm not even dating anyone seriously right now. I'm not trying to pull a Khole Kardashian and get engage to someone I met just minutes ago!

I ended up having to take the pictures down...family members were calling my mom!

It was all fun and games though, and totally made for a fun night! :)

Ride Warriors pt. 1

As we hit mid July, I think I've done a good job of checking off the Summer To Do List. My sister and I got our tattoos, I've booked the trips to NYC and DC to visit friends, and over the weekend we spent Sunday Fun Day being ride warriors at Kennywood Amusement Park. Kennywood is right outside of Pittsburgh, and I've always liked it because it mixes the nostalgic of the past with modern day thrills.

We spent the day riding rides, eating fattening foods (we figure all the walking we did balanced everything out lol), and just had fun acting like kids again. :)

If Heaven Wasn't So Far Away...

I woke up this morning full of nostalgia and melancholy. Today would have been my dad's 60th birthday. He had planned on celebrating this birthday in Vegas. I don't think any of us would have thought last year would have been the last birthday we would get to celebrate with him. {I like to think though that he's up there with Sinatra and all the greats having a grand 'ol party :) }

It's days like today that I realize just how lucky I am to have such an amazing father, even though he was taken from us too soon. and how grateful I am of everything that I do have. Kelly Cutrone said it best when she quoted "I believe you can’t feel real joy unless you’ve felt heartache."

about 20 minutes after I woke up my cousin called and asked me to meet her at the park to go for a run. It's amazing how a little exercise and being around people really lifts me up. I plan on enjoying today and feeling happy, because I know that's what my dad would have wanted. :)

p.s. why I chose this dragonfly picture...

did I ever share with you the story of the dragonfly? on our run today there were tons of dragonflies all over the park. read this story and you'll understand it's significance.

I found this video via C.W.F.H.L. and immediately posted it on my sister's facebook wall. She's one of those people who feels she invincible to things like skin cancer, and thinks she can layout by the pool wearing no sunscreen, and lets not even mention the tanning bed. It bugs me so much, and I'm always hounding her to wear sunscreen, even buy it for her and making sure she puts it on (she's 20...). Hopefully this video will get it's message across to her (and please pass it along to anyone you may know who's like my sister!)

Getting Inked

Yesterday I shared some photos from when my sister and I got our tattoos. I've been wanting to get a tattoo for a while, but I wanted it to be something that had a good meaning. Earlier this year my sister and I decided we would get one in memory of our father who passed away last August. Our father was very proud of his Irish heritage, so we new a shamrock would be a perfect design. Once we decided on the design we went to make an appointment with Jeremy, our tattoo artist (who we both love!). We made the appointment weeks ago, and the first avaliable date...Father's day weekend! Crazy coincidence.

Summer To Do List

Summer is my favorite time of the year. but last summer was basically nonexistent. My dad was sick and we spent every day with him at the hospital, until August when he went to be with the Lord. because of that I am determined to make this summer wonderful (and so far it's been great!). My outlook on life has changed a lot over the past year, and I've realized it's the little things in life that truly mean the most. Here's my list of things I'd like to do before the end of summer:

* start to run again and run a 5k race

*get a tattoo (my sister and I are getting tattoos in memory of our dad)

* visit friends in NYC and DC

* go to as many outdoor concerts as I can

* be a ride warrior @ cedar point and kennywood

*learn to make authentic Spanish Rice and Beans

* have a cooking/baking party and learn to make cakepops

* visit the beach, any beach

* get back into dancing (i miss being at the studio)

* remember to take pictures of all the fun :)

a while ago I did a post on my love for country music, and how I didn't always feel that way about the music genre. It wasn't until college that I started to listen to country music, thanks to my roommates who LOVED it, and it quickly grew on me. The first song I liked was "Something Like That" by Tim McGraw. My friend Emily and I would call it our "good day song", and would listen to it on sunny days when the weather was nice.

Over the weekend I got to see Tim in concert and it was amazing! The Band Perry opened, and my friends and I lucked out, getting seats right by the stage, so close I got to touch him! haha
